Bauhaus – In The Flat Field
Released in January 1980, In The Flat Field is the debut album from Bauhaus and one of the most fully formed debut records in rock history. Few albums have arrived so completely realised — and fewer still have defined an entire genre in the process. This is the record that practically invented gothic rock: wracked, atmospheric, built around Daniel Ash’s angular guitar, David J’s bass and Peter Murphy’s commanding, theatrical vocals.
But what makes it endure is not just what it sounds like — it’s the sheer power of the band at full force, capable of restraint and complete overdrive both, glam-inspired and genuinely dangerous. A record that still sounds like nothing else.
