Bauhaus – Mask
Released in 1981, Mask is Bauhaus’ second studio album and a significant step forward from their already extraordinary debut. Where In the Flat Field was raw and confrontational, Mask is more considered — darker in places, more atmospheric, and more willing to explore texture and space. The band’s sound had expanded, and the results are some of the most compelling music of their career.
Hollow Hills, Of Lillies and Remains, In Fear of Fear and The Man with the X-Ray Eyes are among the standout tracks. Peter Murphy’s vocals are at their most theatrical, and the rhythm section of David J and Kevin Haskins locks in with a precision that gives the whole record its unsettling momentum. Gothic rock at its most refined.
