Curtis Mayfield – Superfly
Released in 1972, Superfly is the soundtrack to Gordon Parks Jr.’s blaxploitation film of the same name — and one of the greatest soul and funk albums ever made. Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced the entire record, delivering a set of songs that were simultaneously a commercial soundtrack and a sharp social commentary on drug culture, poverty and street life in Black America.
Freddie’s Dead and Pusherman are the centrepieces — groove-heavy, lyrically unflinching and utterly timeless. The album outsold the film and stands completely on its own terms. Essential.
