Released in 1993, Black Sunday is Cypress Hill’s second album and a significant step forward from their debut. Darker in tone and heavier in production, it leaned into dissonant samples and a more urgent energy while retaining the West Coast swagger that made the band distinctive. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 — a landmark moment for hip-hop.

Insane in the Brain, I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That and When the Sh-- Goes Down gave the album its commercial reach, while the production from DJ Muggs kept everything grounded in a dense, hypnotic low-end. A record that helped define the sound of early 1990s West Coast rap.
