David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
Originally released in June 1972, this remains one of the defining records of modern rock. Written during the sessions for Hunky Dory and recorded at Trident Studios in London, the album introduced Bowie’s alien rock-star alter ego Ziggy Stardust alongside the formidable Spiders from Mars lineup: Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder and Mick Woodmansey.
Driven by Ronson’s razor-sharp guitar arrangements and Bowie’s theatrical songwriting, the album produced some of his most enduring songs — Starman, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City and Rock ‘n’ Roll Suicide. A landmark moment came with Bowie’s televised performance of Starman on BBC’s Top of the Pops, a cultural flashpoint that helped propel the album into the UK Top 5.
More than fifty years on, Ziggy Stardust remains a blueprint for artistic reinvention — shaping everything from glam rock to punk and alternative music.
