De La Soul – 3 Feet High and Rising

Released in 1989, 3 Feet High and Rising is one of the most joyful and inventive debut albums in hip-hop history. De La Soul — Posdnuos, Dave and Maseo — arrived with a sound that was playful, sample-rich and completely at odds with the harder edges of the era, drawing on everything from funk and soul to French language records and game show formats.

Tracks like Me Myself and I, The Magic Number and Say No Go showcased a wit and creativity that felt genuinely new. The production, handled largely by Prince Paul, turned sampling into an art form — dense with references, but always in service of something warm and alive.

A record that opened up what hip-hop could be, and still sounds like nothing else.
