Released in 1996, Stakes Is High is De La Soul’s fourth studio album and one of the most critically respected records of the mid-90s hip-hop era. At a moment when rap was shifting towards harder, more commercial sounds, De La Soul pushed back — delivering a sharp, self-aware record that called out the artistic decline they saw around them.

Produced in part by J Dilla, the album features guest appearances from Mos Def, Common and Zhane. The title track remains one of the most pointed critiques of hip-hop excess ever committed to record. Thoughtful, musical and uncompromising.
