Released in 2001, the self-titled debut from Gorillaz — Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s virtual band project — arrived as something genuinely new. Blending alternative rock, hip-hop, dub and electronic music, it introduced a cast of animated characters and a sound that defied easy categorisation.

Clint Eastwood, 19-2000, Re-Hash and Tomorrow Comes Today are among the tracks that made the album an instant classic. Guest appearances from Del the Funky Homosapien and Miho Hatori added further texture to an already richly layered record.
