Interpol – Turn on the Bright Lights
A low-end pulse runs throughout — melodic basslines carrying the weight while interlocking guitars build tension above it. Paul Banks’ voice is distant, controlled and unmistakable. Lyrically, the album leans into restraint and unease: direct without overstatement, dark and light, sparse and layered, measured but immediate.
Released in 2002, Turn on the Bright Lights drew comparisons to Joy Division and Wire while sounding entirely its own — a debut that arrived fully formed and set the tone for the post-punk revival of the early 2000s. Obstacle 1, Obstacle 2, NYC and Leif Erikson remain among the most distinctive tracks of the era.
