Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Released in 1998, Mezzanine marked a decisive shift for Bristol’s trip-hop pioneers. Where Blue Lines and Protection leaned into warmth and soul, this third album turns inward — darker, colder and more fractured. The bass is deeper, the textures more abrasive, the mood more tense throughout.
That tension runs through Inertia Creeps, all unease and repetition, while Teardrop — featuring Elisabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins — cuts through with something more fragile and luminous. Angel, Risingson and Exchange complete a record shaped by internal friction but held together with clarity and intent. Bleak, but precise — Mezzanine remains a defining moment not just for Massive Attack, but for the wider trip-hop landscape.
