Patti Smith – Horses

Released in 1975 and produced by John Cale, Horses is the debut album from Patti Smith and one of the most important records in the history of punk and alternative music. Arriving before punk had a name, it fused rock and roll with beat poetry, free jazz and raw, confrontational energy — and announced Smith as a completely singular voice.

Gloria, Redondo Beach, Birdland and Land are among the defining tracks — a record that opened doors for an entire generation of artists and has never stopped feeling urgent. The Robert Mapplethorpe cover photograph is as iconic as the music inside.
