Pixies – Surfer Rosa
Released in 1988 and produced by Steve Albini, Surfer Rosa is the Pixies’ debut full-length and one of the most influential records in the history of alternative rock. Raw, abrasive and completely singular, it established the quiet-loud dynamic that would go on to shape an entire generation of bands — most famously Nirvana, who cited it as a direct influence on Nevermind.
Gigantic, Where Is My Mind, Bone Machine and Cactus remain essential listening. There is nothing quite like Surfer Rosa — a record that sounds like it was made by people who had no interest in sounding like anyone else.
