Released in 1996, Becoming X is the debut album from British trip-hop group Sneaker Pimps and one of the defining records of the genre. Dark, atmospheric and hypnotic, it arrived in the wake of Massive Attack and Portishead but carved out its own identity — colder, more electronic and shot through with an unsettling edge.

6 Underground, Spin Spin Sugar, Low Place Like Home and Tesko Suicide are among the standout tracks on an album that still sounds ahead of its time. Kelli Ali's vocals are perfectly matched to the production — detached, seductive and impossible to ignore.
