Released in June 1998 and produced by Rick Rubin, System of a Down’s self-titled debut announced one of the most distinctive bands of their generation. Fusing heavy metal with punk, folk, Armenian musical influences and sharp political commentary, the album arrived fully formed — chaotic, precise and unlike anything else in rock at the time.

Sugar, Spiders, War? and Suite-Pee are among the standout tracks, each showcasing the band’s ability to shift between aggression and melody without warning. An album that laid the groundwork for Toxicity and cemented System of a Down as a genuinely original force in heavy music.
