The Sisters of Mercy – Floodland
While the goth scene in England was moving into the mainstream in the mid-80s, The Sisters of Mercy had fallen relatively quiet — returning in 1987 with Floodland. Released via Merciful Release and produced with Jim Steinman, the album marked a shift toward a more expansive and controlled sound.
Opening with the two-part Dominion/Mother Russia, Andrew Eldritch and bassist Patricia Morrison build something vast and deliberate. Where earlier releases leaned raw and confrontational, Floodland moves into a more studio-driven space — layered vocals, choral arrangements and a sense of scale that defines the record. Flood and 1959 slow things into something more atmospheric, while This Corrosion stands at the centre: maximal, theatrical and unmistakably gothic.
