The Smiths – Hatful of Hollow
Released in November 1984, several months after their debut album, Hatful of Hollow is a collection of singles, B-sides and BBC session recordings that captures a different and equally essential side of The Smiths. The band always treated singles as standalone statements rather than album promotion, which means many of their finest songs never appeared on a studio LP — and this compilation is where a good number of them live.
It also contains the first appearance of what many consider the band’s defining moment: How Soon Is Now? — Morrissey’s sardonic lyricism over Johnny Marr’s tremolo guitar, one of the most distinctive sounds in British rock. Indispensable.
