Released in 2001, Is This It arrived like a jolt of electricity — five New Yorkers drawing on the city’s earlier punk and art rock lineage and distilling it into something immediate, cool and completely self-assured. The album’s stripped-back production, tight rhythm sections and interlocking guitars felt like a direct rebuke to the overproduced rock of the late 1990s.

Last Nite, Someday, Hard to Explain and The Modern Age defined its minimal, direct approach — songs that felt effortless but were precisely constructed. Is This It didn’t just introduce The Strokes; it helped redirect the course of indie rock in the early 2000s and remains one of the most influential debut albums of its era.
