The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground
Released in March 1969, The Velvet Underground’s self-titled third album marked a significant shift in tone from their earlier work. Stripping back the abrasion of White Light/White Heat and the avant-garde experimentation of their debut, the record is quieter, more melodic and more intimate — a collection of ballads and straightforward rock songs that revealed a softer, more vulnerable side of the band.
Produced by the band themselves, it features some of Lou Reed’s most affecting writing, including Pale Blue Eyes, Candy Says and Beginning to See the Light. Listed in Billboard’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, it remains one of the most quietly influential records in rock history.
