The Velvet Underground – White Light/White Heat
Released in 1968, White Light/White Heat is The Velvet Underground at their most uncompromising. Stripping away much of the melodic softness of their debut, the band pushed further into distortion, repetition and raw energy — creating a record that felt abrasive at the time, and still does.
The title track hits with immediate intensity, while The Gift unfolds as a dark, surreal spoken-word piece layered over grinding instrumentation. Elsewhere, Lady Godiva’s Operation captures the band’s hypnotic, unsettling edge — balancing structure with noise. Far from easy listening, this is a record that challenges more than it comforts. That’s exactly its power.
White Light/White Heat remains one of the most influential albums in experimental rock — a blueprint for everything from punk to noise music that followed.
