The xx – xx

Released in 2009, xx is the debut album from The xx — four young musicians from South West London who arrived with a sound that was immediately distinctive and almost impossible to categorise. Hushed, minimal and deeply intimate, it drew on post-punk restraint, R&B phrasing and the kind of late-night atmosphere that few records manage to sustain across a full album.

Crystalised, Baseline and Islands built their impact through space and understatement — guitars that barely whisper, vocals that intertwine without ever crowding each other, and a rhythm section that holds everything together with quiet precision. Produced by the band themselves, it sounds like nothing was added that didn’t need to be there.

A record that rewards close listening and has only grown in stature since its release.
