The Velvet Underground – Velvet Underground & Nico

Released in 1967 and produced by Andy Warhol, The Velvet Underground & Nico is one of the most influential debut albums in rock history. Combining Lou Reed’s streetwise poetry with John Cale’s classical training and Nico’s glacial vocals, the record was unlike anything else of its era — confrontational, tender, experimental and deeply human all at once.

Tracks like Heroin, Venus in Furs, Femme Fatale and I’ll Be Your Mirror laid the groundwork for punk, post-punk, alternative rock and art rock. Famously slow to sell on release, it has since become one of the most cited and celebrated records ever made. The banana cover alone is an icon.
